Slim and Unique!!!

 Haven't been updating my blog for a couple of days now had some people here to entertain from Philippines. I'm sitting at Siam Sqaure in Bangkok while this girl beside me is checking and looking at my monitor screen what I'm writing on my blog LOL!! Anyway here are The Uniques one of my favorite rocksteady groups, here is a small history

Founded by Slim Smith, Roy Shriley and Franklin White, The vocal trio releasing a few singles in 1966. The group then disbanded, until late 1967 when Smith formed a new version of the group with Jimmy Riley and Lloyd Charmers. The new line-up debuted with "Watch This Sound", a cover version of Stephen Stills' "For What It's Worth", which was a hit along with a string of subsequent singles, many produced by Bunny Lee,Rupie Edwards, who used the rhythm to create the first one-rhythm album, Yamaha Skank. The group's debut album release, Absolutely The Uniques was released by Trojan Records in 1969, although they broke up in the same year. 

Bunny Lee issued a showcase album in the 1970s, and the group name was briefly revived by Riley and Cornell Campbell in 1977 for the album Give Thanks, and again in 1997 with Al Campbell joining Cornell and Riley on the album The Uniques.

Dillinger!! Dub Organizer!!

Hey there Folks! Sorry been slacking on my blog right now. But here you go! One thing I can say his one of first DJs around when the soundsystems been coming out in Jamaica and the UK in the 70s.

Dillinger born in June 25, 1953 in Kingston Jamaica birth name Lester Bullock, Started as a DJ for Prince Jackie and Dennis Alcapone's El Paso Soundsystem with a name under Alcapone Jr. He later changed it to Dillinger and the first Producers he work with was Lee Scratch Perry.


Anyway quite lazy to write so I'll just say this album is dope... LOL!

Everybody seems to go to Paris! Hmmm!!!

Alot of people I know and met seems to be going to Paris, France. I gotta say its one of the most beautiful cities I've been to and The City is just one huge Museum so many things to see Art, Fashion, Culture and Music. Just walking around the city is amazing, I even had the opportunity to Party at the Louvre which my Parisian friends told me its rare to have parties there, and I must say the best was crawling under the city's Catacombs going to a party where there were so much good live music I even still wonder how did they bring their musical instruments there.

Anyway I just wanna share some experiences I had there. But my main purpose is to share the vinyl shops I've been and some info for those who are going to Paris that wants to shop or digging records.

 

One of the places I always go to hang out when I'm not doing anything in Paris was going to Patate Records shop. They Got alot of good selection there from Ska, Rocksteady to Modern Reggae you can buy online too from their website http://www.patate-records.net/ but for me personally I prefer to buy records from the shop, plus you get to know the people in the shop and can help you more with things you want and share more knowledge or gain knowledge. The shop is not far from Bastille a few minutes walk and you can check their address on their website....

 

Other shop I go to is called the Groove Store I met the owner in some art show around Paris. The shop is close to Place de Clichy metro station, they got some rare tunes like Blues, Funk, 70s R&B, Disco, Rock and Rare HipHop Stuff but they don't have much reggae but sometime you would get lucky and bump into some if you dig hard. Me I got some rare tunes over there and bought almost all the chess and checkers record labels. here is their website http://www.groove-store.com/

 But the best place that you can find alot of vinyls is at the weekend Market at Clignancourt easiest way to get there is by Metro subway line 4 the last station "Porte de Clignancourt". When you get there you need to walk for abit but you won't miss the market for sure. There are so many things to buy there aside from records. And If you're around there Check out Le Petit Jamaique they got cool rasta stuff there and some reggae records abit pricey but their good and the shop Owner will give you a good deal with things you buy.When you're done make sure to drop by at Le Red, Gold et Green Ital food the have the nicest ital food and you won't miss it, The place is in Clignancourt at Rue Paul Bert.

Hi Everyone! Hope you all had a good year ending Party and all the best for us this 2010 hope we get much better positive vibes this year! Sorry I didn't post anything before that I was just trying to enjoy my time and get away from the things that really mattered and just get free from it, Enjoying my free time with friends and time for myself. Anyway I made this mix for two friends of mine that is leaving its not much of a good mix but I was in a hurry to do this but too bad I forgot to give this to them cause I was in a hurry to get out of me house so I got 2 CDs here that I won't even gonna use. Anyways I'm sharing this with all of you people there in the internet world. Its a mix of reggae songs that gave me much strength, advice and kept me going through my hard time last year... Pls. do listen to the lyrics instead of the beat... But Pls. keep coming to my blog will put more stuff like Rocksteady, Reggae, Hip-Hop, Kuduro, Dubstep, and Etc.... The Crown Prince Of Reggae " Dennis Brown"

Other legend to give much respect his song gave me a lot of strength ! The Crown Prince of Reggae! Dennis Emmanuel Brown,
Born in February 1, 1957 in Kingston Jamaica, he started his career of singing at th e age of 9 performing at school, but his first recording was at the age 12 in Studio One the single was "No Man is an Island"and was out in 1969 ( Although there was one before that wasn't released ) the single had a steady airplay at that time in Jamaica and I still listen to it a lot LOL. Brown did some back vocal for Alton Ellis in his Album "Sunday coming". Alton Ellis had a small influence in Brown, Ellis advised him to learn playing guitar to help him with his song writing and Ellis teach him the basics. He had two album released in Studio One, but he left studio one after being there for one and a half year the reason well I still haven't found out that yet. 

His International hit was "Money in my Pocket" was produced by Joe Gibbs in 1972. The song was a big hit in the UK and became a favorite of his live performances. This original version of "Money in my Pocket" was in fact produced by Winston "Niney" Holness on behalf of Gibbs, with musical backing from the Soul Syndicate. In the same year, Brown performed as part of a Christmas morning showcase in Toronto, Canada, along with Delroy Wilson, Scotty, Errol Dunkley, and the Fabulous Flames, where he was billed as the "Boy Wonder of Jamaica" and was considered the star of the show in a local newspaper review. 

The song's popularity in the UK was further cemented with the release a deejay version, "A-So We Stay (Money in Hand)", credited to Big Youth and Dennis Brown, which outsold the original single and topped the Jamaican singles chart. Brown and Holness became close, even sharing a house in Pembroke Hall. Brown followed this with another collaboration with Holness on "Westbound Train", which was the biggest Jamaican hit of summer 1973, and Brown's star status was confirmed when he was voted Jamaica's top male vocalist in a poll by Swing magazine the same year. Brown followed this success with "Cassandra" and "No More Will I Roam", and tracks such as "Africa" and "Love Jah", displaying Brown's Rastafari beliefs, became staples on London's sound system scene. In 1973, Brown was hospitalized due to fatigue caused by overwork, although at the time rumours spread that he only had one lung and had only a week to live, or had contracted tuberculosis. He was advised to take an extended break from performing and concentrated instead on his college studies.

Brown went back to music and on tour in the UK in summer 1974, After going back and forth from Jamaica to the UK he decide to move in the UK in 1978. He worked with alot of artists and he was in the UK when the boom of the Dancehall Era in the 1980s and as you all may know he was quite an influential in the dancehall era.  

In the 1990's his health was deteriorating, after his tour in Brazil on May 1999 he returned to Jamaica. In June 30, 1999 He was rushed in the hospital and was diagnosed with Pneumonia, He died in July 1, 1999 rumor has it that his cocaine habit was a contributing factor to his death. 
His Legacy will live on and In 2001, a charitable trust was set up in Brown's name by his wife and 13 children. The Dennis Emanuel Brown Trust works to educate youngsters, maintain and advance the memory of Dennis Brown, and help to provide youngsters with musical instruments. The trust awards the Dennis Emanuel Brown (DEB) bursary for educational achievement each year to students between the ages of 10-12 years.  

The Crown Prince of Reggae as he was commonly called has left us with a vast repertoire of songs which will continue to satisfy the hearts and minds of many people and for generations to come.

A compilation of Hortense Ellis and her older Brother Alton Ellis I love this Album too although this was released in 1990 but the album has most of the best songs they did.. ... Judge Dread! The Legendary King of Rudeness! 1st Caucasian to have a reggae hit!

Now I wanna share Judge Dread the king of Rudeness!! His Real name Alexander Minto Hughes born in May 2, 1945. Hughes was a bouncer in night clubs, a bodyguard and a Pro Masked Wrestler before he became a Ska and Reggae singer. He was exposed to reggae and Ska while he was a bouncer in London and met Derrik Morgan and Prince Buster, and became a DJ at a local radio station and ran his own sound system.


When Prince Buster made a big underground hit in 1969, Hughes capitalized on it with the recording of his own "Big Six", based on Verne & Son's "Little Boy Blue", which was picked up by Trojan boss Lee Gopthal, and released on Trojan's 'Big Shot' record label under the stage name Judge Dread, the name taken from another of Prince Buster's songs. His song "Big Six" hit no. 11 in the UK charts in 1972  and sold more than 300,000 copies and was on the charts for half a year but it didn't get much radio airply due to the explicit lyrics.

Hughes was the first Caucasian (white) recording artist to have a hit in Jamaica and went to perform live there, Many was surprised that he was white. Hughes was a man full of wonders he has a Guiness Book world record crediting him for having the highest number of banned songs of all time in BBC radio airplay.


No matter how elicit his lyrics are the man has a good heart , The famine in Ethiopia prompted Dread to help organize a benefit concert featuring The Wailers and Desmond Dekker, and he also released a benefit single "Molly". Despite this single not featuring Dread's trademark innuendo, it was still banned from radio airplay, and failed to chart. The radio stations' wariness over Dread records led him to release singles under the pseudonyms JD Alex and Jason Sinclair, but the BBC still banned them.


His Tragic death was his last performance in The Penny Theatre in Canterbury city, England, he was walking down from the stage after his performance when he had a heart attack he died on the March 13 1998. He will still live on as the first White Rude Boy Legend!

Don Drummond aka Don Cosmic aka Don D

Hi there everyone just sharing another artist info to you all. Don Drummond born in March 12, 1932a founding member of the Skatalites, he was the genre's most prolific composer, with well over 300 songs to his name before his brief career ended in tragedy. Even prior to the birth of ska, Drummond was already regarded as something of a Jamaican legend for his jazz prowess. Beginning his studio career in 1956, he primarily cut specials, recordings originally designed strictly for sound system play; in 1959, however, these specials began receiving proper commercial release in both Jamaica and England. As a result, Drummond's star ascended even higher, and under the direction of producer Coxsone Dodd, he composed and arranged hundreds of classic ska recordings for both Studio one and Treasure Island. 

In 1964 Studio One musical director Jackie Mittoo set about assembling the Skatalites bring on board is Don Drummond he quickly emerged among the group's creative and spiritual leaders. On January 1, 1965 Don Drummond was arrested for the murder of his long time girlfriend Anite Marguerita Mahfood in his house, she was a victim of multiple stab wounds. 
Don Drummond was found legally insane and was confined in Belle Vue Asylum in Kingston he later died there in May 6, 1969 reports say that he committed suicide, But there are rumors swirling about his death in his memorial Hugh Malcolm ( Drummer of Supersonic) shouting out that Don Drummond was a victim of the government authorities who is said that they targeted Kingston area Performers, Another rumor is that his girlfriend Anita Mahfood's Family hired gangsters or mobster to murder him as a revenge for her death. Whether if he was murdered or committed suicide in any case his lost was an end of an era, But his legacy still lives on.....
